Ultrafiltration (UF) is a pressure-driven membrane filtration process that removes suspended solids, colloids, bacteria, and some viruses from water. It acts as a physical barrier using semi-permeable membranes with pore sizes typically ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 microns. UF is widely used in both industrial and municipal applications because it consistently delivers high-quality water, regardless of variations in feedwater. It serves as a reliable pre-treatment for processes such as reverse osmosis, ensuring system efficiency and durability.
The UF system works by passing water under pressure through hollow fiber or spiral-wound membranes. Contaminants such as turbidity, pathogens, and organic matter are effectively separated, while purified water (permeate) passes through. Unlike conventional filtration, UF offers consistent performance without dependency on chemical dosing.
Ultrafiltration finds applications across multiple sectors. In drinking water treatment, it ensures safe and clear water by removing harmful microorganisms. In industries such as food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, and electronics, UF provides high-purity process water. It is also used in wastewater recycling, tertiary treatment of sewage, and pre-treatment for desalination plants.
